AIAA Projects: NSW North Coast Branch

2002

Expansion

AIAA members in NSW North Coast have held a formation meeting to establish an AIAA branch for the co-ordination of Indonesian cultural activities in the region including artist/musician-in-residence programs. A meeting of AIAA members has been held in Sydney which has agreed to look to the establishment of a local AIAA Branch in Sydney. It is hoped that members in other areas will follow this lead and form their own branches in their own local areas.

The national meeting place of AIAA members is the AIAA egroup, indoarts@yahoogroup.com. The egroup provides fast and easy access and communication between members throughout Australia and Indonesia. Members share ideas and plan projects together, and most importantly, get to know each other via email.

New Radio Stuff

As a result of Reconciliation Day, Suara Indonesia, (AIAA radio program), has offered to sponsor the development of an aboriginal radio program at BayFM by providing training for local aboriginal presenters on Suara Indonesia. It is intended that the aboriginal community will apply for their own show at the end of the season. This collaboration focuses on the connections that have existed between the peoples of Indonesia and Australia for thousands of years. Training is also being provided to members of the Latin American community wishing to establish their own show.

Artist-in-Residence

In 2001, AIAA N.S.W. North Coast Branch was successful in gaining support from the Australia Indonesia Institute in Canberra, for a small grant to invite Wahyu Roche to Byron Bay for a three month residency. Wahyu plays Kendang (drums), Kacapi (strings, harp), Suling (bamboo flute). Wahyu's residency began February 18th, 2002.

2001

Work for the Dole

During 2001, in Byron Bay, we embarked on a six month Ballina Employment and Training Centre sponsored "AIAA Work for the Dole" project. It was exciting to discover the level of expertise the ten participants brought with them; BA's in Media Communication, Asian Studies, Visual Arts, Communication, Performing Arts and Diplomas in Graphic Arts and Textile Design. In 2002 also, a Work for the Dole team is working for AIAA. This project involves working on updating the AIAA website and directories, working on issues of Inspirasi magazine, and working on special projects for AIAA.

Budya Indonesia Course

This was a joint project by ACE Byron Bay and Byron Shire Gamelan Society. This course provided the opportunity for Indonesian-Australian people to share their culture with the wider community. The course was essential for all teachers and students of Indonesian language in order to increase their awareness and understanding of Indonesian culture by learning directly from Indonesian people.
