Coming from the west to the east about 10 years ago, I am still struck by the sense of isolation that runs like an undercurrent in the Australian psyche. Mass media and the information highway have strengthened the association with a European lineage, as some Asian leaders have commented. Australia is in the region but not of the region. I think this is an unfortunate trend given that our region is so culturally rich and diverse. From an artistic viewpoint this is a very exciting time to be working in Australasia, we are on something of an Avant-garde where two differing cultures living in close proximity (Australia and Indonesia) are interacting , albeit with a degree of suspicion and some fear emanating , ironically from the leaders of both cultures. I think art can function as a catalyst in easing this fusion of cultures because it transcends a lot of the difference and can speak a universal language. The exhibition Expressions of love between Australia and Indonesia is a valuable platform for a dialogue to emerge between individuals who may never meet and may be living very different lives but who share a bond through their art practice and their urge to understand their neighbours.
