Being Introduced to the Australia Indonesia Arts Alliance by a friend lead to my Volunteer work with the group. I thought by being involved in the activities of AIAA I would expand my awareness about Indonesia. The only previous knowledge I had about the country was from visiting Bali many years ago, being young I was really just interested in experiencing the fun side of Bali. The 8 months working with AIAA has given me a deeper awareness of Indonesia, in particluar Bali. I now understand the great love the Balinese have for their island and how they so closely connect with it through their beautiful, meditative, cultural practices of arts and music, -this I have tried to reflect in my painting.

Efen Jaenudin was a musician in residence from Indonesia at AIAA during the time I worked as a volunteer. The reason for having Efen’s half face painted and my half face painted as one reflects the merging of 2 countries to create harmony and peace. The illustrations in the background of the painting on my side of the face describes my increased cultural awareness of Indonesia. The images in the background on Efen’s side of the face shows the Indonesian respect for the beauty in nature which never fades away.
