Bali Fine Arts Biennale Pre-Summit (January- October)
" Space and Scape"

In an apparent move to put Bali in the front lines of the world's contemporary arts scene, a group of Balinese scholars, artists and writers have pooled their resources to organize the island's first fine arts biennale.

The biennale will comprise two main events, the pre-Summit and the Summit. The pre-Summit will take place from January until October 2005 while the Summit will be held from November to December 2005.

The pre-Summit will be in the form of various constructive, critical events aimed at conceptually enriching the biennale and warming up the public for the upcoming Summit," Bandem noted.

“IMD for Aceh” A Fundraising Concert by Institut Musik Daya and Habitat for Humanity Indonesia

Friday, 18th February 2005, 19:00 for 19:30, in the Nick Mamahit’s Performance Hall of the Institut Musik Daya

In response to the Tsunami disaster, any funds raised during this event will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Indonesia for building a school and arts community centre to maintain the education for children of Aceh and North Sumatra.

Open Day and Press Gathering

2nd March 2005 from 6:00 – 7:30PM

To help raise public awareness of the need for arts management, an Open Day and Press Gathering is being held at Institut Musik Daya, to inform the media about the past and current activities of the Institute in achieving its objectives since the school moved to its present premises and to introduce the Arts Management Certificate Program.

Institut Musik Daya, founded in 2001 by Tjut Nyak Deviana Daudsjah, is the first music institute respecting international teaching standards in Indonesia. Its purpose is to participate in raising the standards of music in Indonesia, and to diffuse original high-quality music throughout the archipelago. Based in a cheerful and pleasant residence in Kebayoran Baru, a quiet South Jakarta neighborhood, it offers complete facilities and prominent teachers to achieve a successful and enjoyable formation in music practice, theory and performance.

"Building the Blue Print of the Indonesian State"

The Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Australia (Indonesian Student’s Association in Australia/PPIA) will organize the 2nd Indonesia Next Conference, to be held in Canberra, May 2005.

The conference will provide a dynamic forum for Indonesian and Australian youth to dialogue the following issues:

Achieving stability and security: what are the threats and how should Indonesia deal with them (especially after the unspeakable Tsunami that hit Aceh and North Sumatera)? What relationships are important and how could they be strengthened?
The future of Islam in Indonesia, where to from here?
Indonesia’s economic development: the national economic development strategy, banking, fiscal policy, monetary policy, state enterprises, small and medium enterprises.
Sectoral development: the future of agriculture, natural resources management, health and education, and forestry and fishery.
Regional development including issues of political and fiscal decentralization, rural poverty, and ethnic conflict.
Domestic politics including examining the political party system, the general election, the parliamentary system and the role of the security services.
Good governance: how to continue the push for institutional and bureaucratic reform.
Media: improving the media’s voice, integrity and professionalism.

The conference will explore ideas from Indonesia, looking across the disciplines to formulate alternative strategies and policies that together form a blueprint for Indonesia’s development. Conference participants will primarily be Indonesian students studying at Australian universities. Also, Australian students of Indonesia and Australian Youth Ambassadors will be invited to present papers and/or participate. The conference will strengthen dialogue and cooperation between thefuture leaders of Indonesia’s private and public sectors, and strengthen their voice in Indonesia’s development.

The conference will invite Hon Alexander Downer (Minister for Foreign Affairs, Australia, Dr. Muhammad Hidayat Nurwahid (Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly/MPR), Dr. Bambang Sudibyo, (Indonesia’s National Education Minister) and Dr. Sri Mulyani (Indonesia’s State Minister for the National Development Planning/Bappenas) as the potential keynote guest speakers.

Australian Consortium for "In-Country" Indonesian Studies

August - December 2005

ACICIS can now place participants for a semester in the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia’s premier institutions for the performing and visual arts. Students can study gamelan, wayang kulit, dance, theatre, art, sculpture, dalang studies and many other subjects.

ACICIS is a consortium of Australian universities which sends students to study for a semester at Indonesian universities. This new study option is not just open to Australian students, but also to performers and teachers from Australia or anywhere else in the world. In fact, anyone at all who is interested in learning more about the Arts in Indonesia can attend. All are welcome.
