Australian-Indonesian English Language Teacher Exchange Pilot Project

In response to requests from the Indonesian Department of National Education for assistance in both English language training in schools and increasing the competency of its Indonesian English teachers a pilot project was devised by the Asia Education Foundation and implemented at Bonnyrigg High School in Term 3, 2004. The Australian-Indonesian English Language Teacher Exchange Project involved eight Indonesian English teachers selected by the Indonesian Ministry of National Education who were chosen for their proficiency in English and mutual interest in fostering cross-cultural skills.

With a strong focus on enhancing English language teaching capabilities, the program was also aimed at promoting the exchange of cultural information and resources between countries and forging lasting links between educators, institutions and communities.

Bonnyrigg High School was fortunate to host Pak Sudirham, a deputy principal from SMPN 5 in Kendari in South-East Sulawesi and his influence and cultural insights proved invaluable to the students. The program helped build new friendships and will have long lasting benefits for both countries. Bonnyrigg High School now has plans to establish a sister school relationship which it hopes will further contribute to strong links already created.

Arts, culture and political and social change since Suharto

Discussion workshop - University of Tasmania, Launceston, December 16-18

The discussion is to identify and analyse significant developments in Indonesian arts and popular culture since the end of the New Order regime. Since 1998 big changes have taken place in political structures and ideologies, as well as economic conditions and cultural configurations - the introduction of regional autonomy in the administrative sphere, political liberalisation and espousal of the ideology of participatory democracy, increased freedom of ownership and expression in the media, plus economic hardship and heightened religious-cultural conflict. Responses from participants and presentations by August 30. Registration and accommodation at:
