Bandung Art Event 2001

Preliminary Proposal
August 18th - September 18th

The Bandung Art Event (BAE) will be an international art biennale executed with some other collaborative event (theatre, music, and other public activities). It will be an attempt to revitalize art activities in the city of Bandung, which has never before had an international art biennale.

The 'awareness of trans-disciplinary' will be a key phrase for the planning and execution of the BAE in realizing its existence as part of a better practice of social and cultural life. This awareness is not only meant to be a mixture of artistic expressions (expression through visual art, music, theatre, performing art, etc), but also in a broader sense as an inter-field of activities (art, science, technology, spirituality, etc); an inter-field of professions (artists, scientists, teachers/ lecturers, businessmen, politicians, etc); and a cross-generational activity, etc.

In the era of rapid change of information and communication technology of today, the BAE should promote cross cultural co-operation to gain a better mutual understanding within the context of the inter-cultural influences of the post-industrial era.

We will locate the BAE in the city of Bandung, utilising its social, economical, political, geographical, cultural and historical potentialities as a frame for ideas, and recognising its potential as a strategic site for cultural exchanges.

Organization
Bandung Art Event will be co-ordinated by the Bandung Art Event Foundation, which was established to take the form of an umbrella of the activities. Members of the foundation consist of cultural theorists, art critics, curators, experienced artists, and professionals. The foundation will appoint a committee of the Bandung Art Event to be the organizing body of the project. The committee will consist of curators, art organizers, artists, communication & promotion experts, and other relevant professionals.

Rationale of the project
To re-construct the role and position of Indonesian art developments. To become an essential link in social practices and cultural life as a whole. To design a sustainable development practice for the Indonesian art infrastructure. To create a critical mechanism within Indonesian art development in order to develop an autonomous mechanism of self-identification and self-orientation of Indonesian arts development and its cultural life in the widest sense.

Objectives of the project
Promoting the city of Bandung as a potential place for cultural tourism.Establishing a continuous city event agenda of arts activities in Indonesia. Promoting the development of Indonesian arts and culture.

The art exhibitions. There will be some other exhibitions considered as 'the off-shoot biennale' which may be organized by a particular gallery or museum or other institution. The committee will co-ordinate these exhibitions and promote them in the activities guidebook and brochures. These activities are to be categorized as 'the second circle of the project'.

The arts and public activities. These activities take the form of participation and co-operation with certain other institutions interrelated with the art biennale by the general theme of the event.
